Symptoms & Diagnosis

  • Difficulty breathing, especially during physical activity or at rest.
  • A persistent cough that lasts for several weeks or months.
  • A high-pitched whistling sound when breathing, often associated with narrowing of the airways.
  • Discomfort or pain in the chest, which may be exacerbated by breathing deeply or coughing.
  • Hemoptysis, or the presence of blood in sputum or phlegm.
  • Frequent bouts of pneumonia, bronchitis, or other respiratory infections.
  • Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
  • Sleep disturbances, such as snoring or periods of interrupted breathing during sleep (a symptom of sleep apnea).
  • Edema or fluid retention, which may indicate heart or lung issues.

At Trinity hospitals, diagnosing pulmonary conditions involves a comprehensive approach. We begin with a detailed review of your medical history, symptoms, and potential risk factors. A thorough physical examination focuses on your chest and lung areas to identify visible signs of distress or abnormalities. Our diagnostic arsenal includes pulmonary function tests to assess lung function, imaging studies like X-rays and CT scans for detailed lung images, and, when necessary, bronchoscopy for closer examination. Blood tests and arterial blood gas analysis provide insights into oxygen levels and potential infections.
